Summer Auto Maintenance Checklist
The dog days of summer are here and with the fun and sun come a few checklist items to keep your vehicle running smoothly.
Air Filters:
The hot, humid, pollen-filled air of Virginia will have your air filters working overtime. Both engine and cabin air filters are more prone to clogging this time of year due to the humid air trapping more dust and debris.
- A clogged engine air filter can restrict airflow and ultimately cause poorer fuel economy, increased carbon emissions and higher risk of overheating your engine. Changing out an old filter will result in savings at the pump and will help prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your engine.
- A clogged cabin air filter can cause a lower output of air through your vents along with a moldy/musty smell when turning on your AC. Continuing to use your AC with a clogged filter will put strain on your AC blower motor. Changing out an old filter will result in better air quality, improved performance with your AC and will help prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your blower motor.
Oil Change and Tune Ups:
The summer heat will break down older oil, resulting in lack of proper lubrication and engine cooling properties, along with leaving deposits on the engine and potentially clogging passages with a sludge-like film.
Make sure you maintain regular oil changes, especially in the summer to avoid costly auto engine repairs. On top of regular oil changes, you should check your oil dipstick regularly when you stop to fill up your tank.
You may need a fresh oil change if:
- Your oil looks dark and gritty
- Your engine runs louder than usual (could be a sign of engine wear)

Tire Pressure and Tread:
Tread: Usually, we think tire tread is more important to maintain in the winter, as bald tires are more likely to slip on ice and snow. However, we tend to drive more and longer distances in summer and hydroplaning in summer rain can be just as dangerous. Do a physical inspection to ensure your tires will keep you safely within the lines.
- Pressure: The air and roadways heat up in summer, expanding the air in your tires, which can cause overinflation. If your tires are being driven on without the proper inflation, you’ll be causing premature damage to your tread and tire walls. Not to mention, properly inflated tires can increase fuel economy by upwards of 3%!

Brakes:
Brakes don’t typically appreciate extreme temperatures, which is why it’s recommended to have your brakes checked at least once a year (or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first) to catch any issues with pads, discs, or rotors.
Fluids:
Coolant, Transmission, Brake, and Power Steering fluids degrade more easily in higher temperatures, which can cause a need for significant auto repairs. Be sure to check your fluid levels and condition at regular intervals, such as every oil change. Low levels may indicate a leak, which is important to take care of right away to avoid costly repairs or irreparable damage. Replacing dirty fluids is a low cost maintenance service that can prevent multiple issues from becoming significant auto repairs.
